On May 2, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally inaugurated the Vizhinjam International Seaport, a major infrastructure project completed at an estimated cost of Rs. 8,867 crore.
The Prime Minister was received by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his Cabinet colleagues. Mr. Modi then boarded the cargo vessel MSC Celestinomaresca, which had docked at the port, and later visited key installations, including the Port Operations Building, before formally inaugurating the seaport.
Vizhinjam is India’s first semi-automated port and is positioned as one of the world’s most advanced transshipment facilities. It is expected to significantly reduce vessel turnaround times and boost India's capacity to accommodate large container ships.
At the inauguration ceremony, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan thanked Prime Minister Modi for dedicating the project to the nation. “On behalf of the people of Kerala, I express our heartfelt gratitude to the Prime Minister for visiting our state and dedicating this landmark project. I also congratulate the Adani Group for their excellent execution of this mission,” he said.
PM Modi said the full potential of the port economy is realised when infrastructure development and ease of doing business are prioritised and promoted.
“Over the past decade, this approach has been the cornerstone of the government’s port and waterways policies. Significant strides have been made in advancing industrial activities and driving the holistic development of the State,” he said
