Vizhinjam Port to be inaugurated by PM Modi on 02-May-2025

Posted on 24 Apr 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will preside over the launch, with a high-level reception committee established to ensure a grand and public-centric ceremony. Minister Vasavan led a meeting to finalize arrangements for community participation and parallel events that will underscore the importance of the occasion.

Minister Vasavan stated that once the fully commissioned Vizhinjam Port becomes fully operational, a significant share of its revenue will go to the Central government. He explained that for every rupee collected as customs duty, the Centre receives 60 paise, while the State is expected to receive only one to three paise. Based on rough estimates, Vizhinjam is projected to generate ?10,000 crore annually through customs duties, with the Centre gaining an additional ?6,000 crore each year.

By 2028, when the next development phase is completed, the port's minimum installed capacity is expected to reach 3 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) per year. The Adani Group plans to invest approximately ?9,500 crore in these subsequent phases. Even before its official commissioning, the port saw active use, with ships beginning to dock during trial operations starting July 11, 2024, followed by the launch of commercial operations on December 3, 2024.

To date, 285 ships have berthed at the port, which has impressed global observers by handling an impressive 5,93,000 TEUs in a short time, achieving 110% capacity utilization. In February and March 2025, Vizhinjam Port topped cargo movements among ports on India’s south and west coasts, reaching the milestone of handling 1 lakh TEUs per month.
