It is great news that approval has been granted for Vizhinjam to be developed. This would bring a lot of revenue and much needed boost to Trivandrum. As a Trivandrumite, I look forward to these develpoments.
However, I am concerned that the rest of the infrastructure in Trivandrum is not developed enough to make it the success it could be. For a container port to be functioning at its best, there should be good surface transport infrastructure to support it. Sadly the roads and highways in Kerala are in a very poor state. Even the newly extended highway going to Kovalam which will connect to Vizhinjam is only single lane which wont be enough if it is to support good container lorry traffic. I hope the concerned authorities will have the foresight to develop surface transport infrastrucure to make this massive investment in Vizhinjam port worthwhile! |
